Melissa Barker is a Certified Archives Manager currently working as the Houston County, Tennessee Archivist. She is also a Professional Genealogist and lectures, teaches and writes about the genealogy research process, researching in archives and records preservation. She conducts virtual webinar presentations all across the United States for genealogical and historical societies. She writes a popular blog entitled A Genealogist in the Archives. She is the Reviews Editor for the Federation of Genealogical Societies (FGS) magazine FORUM. She writes a bi-weekly advice column entitled The Archive Lady that can be viewed at Abundant Genealogy. She writes a monthly column entitled The Archive Lady’s Corner in the In-Depth Genealogist Magazine. She writes a bi-weekly column for her local newspaper The Stewart-Houston Times called From the Archives. She is a regular contributor as The Archive Lady on Lisa Louise Cooke’s Genealogy Gems Podcast. She is married to her wonderful husband, Chris Barker and has one grown daughter. Her Professional Genealogy expertise is in Tennessee records and she takes research clients. She has been researching her own family history for the past 27 years.

Contact or visit local archives where your ancestor lived. Find out what records are not online and not microfilmed that could help with your research.
What is your favorite repository?
My favorite repository is the Tennessee State Library and Archives, it is my home away from home.
