Dr. Ryan and The Emerald Isle 2

Dr. James Ryan is a writer and publisher who has been active in Irish genealogy for the past 25 years. He founded Flyleaf Press – www.flyleaf.ie  - in 1987,  provided research services for clients for many years,  and has lectured widely in North America and Ireland.   His book [amazon_link id="0916489760" target="_blank" container="" container_class="" ]Irish Records[/amazon_link] has been a standard guide for Irish genealogists since its publication in 1987. His research interests have included church records, which resulted in his editing and publication of [amazon_link id="0953997413" target="_blank" container="" container_class="" ]‘Irish Church Records’[/amazon_link] (which details the background to record-keeping among 8 Irish denominations);   and he has also written Research Guides on two specific counties:  Dublin and Sligo.  In recent times he has been researching Rentals (i.e. records of tenant agreements and rent payments).

Dr. James Ryan joins The In-Depth Genealogist with his new column, The Emerald Isle. This column will cover Irish family history research issues. It will explore some of the myths and mysteries of this field, introduce useful sources, and suggest approaches. It will hopefully inspire some additional research success among readers, and also provide some new insights into what is already known about Irish ancestors.

The Emerald Isle will take a broad view of what is relevant to Irish genealogy and include issues related to social and local history. This is on the basis that our ancestors did not live to create records. The records on which we depend were created as a result of local and national circumstances and understanding these circumstances will help us to understand their lives.

I’m looking forward to reading Dr. Ryan’s column. Our 7 x g grandfather simply appeared in Maryland in the 1700s and no one has been able to trace him. Kirven (Irish we think, but could be English or even Scots). Looking forward to clues!
